Environment

In his first years in office, Congressman John Garamendi has been a recognized leader for the environment in Congress, someone willing to take on the entrenched interests that threaten our economy, national security, and treasured national wonders for short term greed. It's a reputation Garamendi has carried with him after decades of public service. As a California state legislator, he authored the first alternative energy tax credit in the nation and helped save Lake Tahoe. As Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Interior Department under President Bill Clinton, he helped shape the Administration's policies on national parks, water resources, clean energy, and conservation.

The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and River Communities

Garamendi, a Member of the House Natural Resources Committee, is a leader in Congress and on the Subcommittee on Water Resources in fighting to protect the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and establish an 'all-California' water policy that works for California's farmers, fishermen, cities, and Delta and river communities. Congressman Garamendi is the author of legislation that would establish a Heritage Area in the Delta, helping to protect the culture and character of the Delta. Identical companion legislation has been introduced by Senator Dianne Feinstein.

During a recent debate over dangerous Republican legislation that would reignite the California water wars, Garamendi warned, "I’m a battle-tested veteran of the California water wars, and I’d frankly prefer to talk about past battles than wade into this hornet’s nest again, but I’ll be damned if I let anybody destroy the Delta. This legislation threatens the Delta, jeopardizes drinking water for California cities, and puts the interests of a select well-connected few above the entire state."

Conservation and Agriculture

Garamendi understands that our nation's farmers are often eager partners in conserving nautral habitats and preserving wildlife. Garamendi's amendment to the Farm Bill will make it easier for rice farmers in the 3rd District to make their land a good habitat for ducks and other waterfowl. Garamendi has also been active on establishing and support land trusts to help ensure ranchlands in rural communities stay open spaces hospitable to any number of wildlife.

Make It In America: Clean Energy and Public Transportation

Garamendi has also been a staunch advocate for clean technology, understanding that America's economy and national security depend on ending our addiction to oil. His Make It In America package includes bills that encourage domestic manufacturing of public transportation and clean energy like solar, wind, algae, and biofuels to create good middle class jobs, rebuild America's manufacturing sector, and help America take its place in the 21st Century Green Industrial Revolution. Garamendi's legislation could create local Northern California jobs when regional transit systems like the Capital Corridor Make It In America and buy American-manufactured equipment.

He was also a proud supporter of Home Star legislation, offering incentives to homeowners and business owners interested in making their buildings more energy efficient. Garamendi is also a proud supporter of livable communities.
