WASHINGTON, DC— The California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV) and the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, announced today their endorsement of John Garamendi for re-election to Congress (CA-3). Garamendi is a strong advocate for growing our clean energy economy and safeguarding California’s precious natural resources.

"Congressman Garamendi has spent his career working to protect our environment, and in Congress he has proven to be a critical environmental ally," said LCV Action Fund President Gene Karpinski. “He recognizes the harsh impacts climate change has on our environment, economy and communities, and has consistently fought to reduce our reliance on the fossil fuels and prevent further development of offshore drilling.”

“Throughout his years in public service, Congressman Garamendi has worked tirelessly to protect California’s important natural landscapes from Big Polluters,” said Sarah Rose, CEO of the CLCV. “He has always been someone that California families can count on to protect the places that make our state so special, to help build our state’s thriving clean energy economy, and to keep our air and water safe and clean for our kids and grandkids.”

"I'm proud to have earned the endorsement of the California League of Conservation Voters and the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund,” said Garamendi. “Congress needs leaders who acknowledge the overwhelming scientific consensus that humans contribute to the climate crisis and are proactive in proposing commonsense solutions. With powerful conservation voices like CLCV and the LCV Action Fund having my back, I'm confident we'll make sure the 3rd District remains a district where the need for clean air and clean water is taken seriously."

As a member of the Safe Climate Caucus, Congressman Garamendi recognizes the severe threat climate change poses to our country and is devoted to reducing our reliance on dirty fossil fuels. Garamendi introduced a bill that would ban offshore oil drilling in California’s coastal waters and introduced jobs legislation that would increase investment in renewable energy sources like solar and wind power.  He’s also a supporter of Home Star legislation, which offers incentives to homeowners and businesses to make their buildings more energy efficient. Additionally, in the California state legislature, he wrote the first state alternative energy tax credit in the United States.

Throughout his various roles serving his Californian constituents, Representative Garamendi has fought to protect California’s stunning natural landscapes.  In the state legislature he led efforts to preserve Lake Tahoe, authoring legislation that forever protected the lake from development, and he’s also an outspoken advocate for California’s San Joaquin River Delta and the Mono Lakes.  Furthermore, as the Deputy Secretary of the Interior, he helped shape the Clinton Administration’s policies on national parks, clean energy and conservation.

Garamendi has earned an 89 percent lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard. The non-partisan Scorecard is the nationally accepted yardstick used to rate members of Congress on environmental and clean energy issues. Based on key environmental votes in the House and Senate, it is often used by the media to quickly describe a Member’s record. For more information, visit http://scorecard.lcv.org.

Garamendi is featured on LCV Action Fund’s GiveGreen website, the only bundling website devoted exclusively to raising money for environmental champions for federal office.

About LCV Action Fund

The League of Conservation Voters Action Fund (LCVAF), the connected federal political action committee (PAC) of the League of Conservation Voters, works to elect candidates who will implement sound environmental laws and policies, and defeat those who stand in the way of progress. Since the 1994 election cycle, LCVAF has helped elect and re-elect 69 U.S. Senators and 306 members of the U.S. House of Representatives.  In the 2013-2014 election cycle, LCVAF endorsed over 70 candidates and raised and donated almost $6 million dollars via GiveGreen. Over the last several years, our efforts have also helped elevate climate change and clean energy as critical issues in key elections.
