RIO VISTA, CA – Congressman John Garamendi (D-Fairfield, CA), a lifelong rancher, toured the California Vegetable Specialties facility, the only producer of endives in America, and the Barrier Systems plant, which manufactures moveable highway barriers and other road safety products. In addition to learning about the production methods of both businesses, the Congressman spoke with employees and management.
"These businesses display the best of American businesses, a risk taking entrepreneurial spirit, skilled workmanship, and a strong work ethic," said Congressman Garamendi. "Both fulfill important societal needs. Endives provide nutrition and variety to America's diet, and Northern California's commuters understand that road safety products prevent one mishap from becoming a tragedy."
Garamendi continued, "I will continue to partner with local businesses, so that they have the best chance to succeed and to Make It In America."
Congressman Garamendi has joined House Democrats in championing a Make It In America agenda to strengthen American manufacturing, including farmers, and the entire U.S. economy. He is the author of Make It In America legislation that would require taxpayer dollars for transportation and clean energy projects are spent on U.S. manufacturing, employing American workers.
Endives are grown from chicory roots under precise conditions. To learn about the process, watch this video or visit the California Vegetable Specialties website at www.endive.com.
