WALNUT CREEK – Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi, a Democratic candidate in the 10th Congressional District, today is proud to announce that he has received endorsements from the San Francisco Chronicle and San Francisco Bay Guardian.
"I am honored to have received endorsements from the San Francisco Chronicle and San Francisco Bay Guardian," said Garamendi. "The Bay Area's largest newspaper and largest progressive weekly often disagree on a lot of issues, but on the need for experienced leadership in these troubled times, they are in unison. Debates over health care, job creation, and climate change are front and center in Washington, and my three decades in public service have centered on finding innovative solutions to these very real problems. I will represent the people of the 10th Congressional District with the passion and drive that have defined my entire career and remain focused on the serious issues at hand."
“Lt. Gov. John Garamendi stands out in this crowd because his vast portfolio of experience is so well aligned with the issues of the times and the big concerns of the district,” explained the San Francisco Chronicle editorial board. “He was an aggressive and effective insurance commissioner (think health care, consumer issues such as foreclosure), deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Interior (delta, climate change) and a state legislator from 1974 to 1991. The 64-year-old Garamendi has the confidence and depth of knowledge that would allow him to hit the ground running in Congress - and his history suggests he would be unabashed in doing so.”
“Garamendi has a forceful presence, progressive values, long relationships with key power brokers and knowledgeable advocates, and an unmatched history of intensive work on the most pernicious problems that Congress is now wrestling with, including health care reform and resource issues,” explained the San Francisco Bay Guardian editorial board. “From day one, he would be a leader who would help President Barack Obama move his agenda. ‘I have the experience and knowledge we need right now in Congress,’ Garamendi told the Guardian's editorial board. He's right, and he has earned our endorsement.”
Two polls released last week by Survey USA and Tulchin Research show Garamendi with a double digit lead over his Democratic challengers in the 10th Congressional District special primary election. The Survey USA poll was commissioned by CBS 5, while the Ben Tulchin poll was commissioned by the Garamendi campaign. No other candidates or third parties have chosen to release a poll since Garamendi entered the race.
John Garamendi has been endorsed by party leaders, including former President Bill Clinton, former Vice President Al Gore, and former California Democratic Party Chair Art Torres.
He has also been endorsed by dozens of unions and community groups, including the California Teachers Association, California Federation of Teachers, California Nurses Association, Sierra Club, Alameda, Napa-Solano, and Sacramento Central Labor Councils, California Labor Federation, and SEIU State Council.
Garamendi has also been endorsed by many local officials, including Assemblymember Mariko Yamada, Solano County Board of Supervisors President John Vasquez, Fairfield Mayor Harry Price, Antioch Mayor Jim Davis, Dixon Mayor Jack Batchelor, former Livermore Mayor John Shirley, former Livermore Mayor Cathie Brown, and former Concord Mayor and current City Councilmember Helen Allen.
A special primary election will be held on September 1st. For more information, please visit http://www.garamendi.org.
