WALNUT CREEK – Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi today received the endorsement of the Contra Costa Times the largest circulation newspaper within the 10th Congressional District.
“Of all 14 candidates running in the Sept. 1 special election, we felt Garamendi had the right combination of experience, knowledge of key issues and dedication to serving the public interest to make him the best choice to fill Tauscher's seat,” the Times explained in their endorsement. “We have no cause to alter that assessment and, once again, ask voters to cast their ballots for Garamendi.”
Added the Times, “[Republican candidate David Harmer] lacks Garamendi's long record of government service in public office and likely would not have as much influence in Washington, D.C., to benefit the district. We believe Garamendi's experience can better serve area interests and that he deserves voter support on Tuesday.”
The Contra Costa Times endorsement also highlights the sharp contrast in policies and values between Lt. Governor Garamendi, a former Peace Corps volunteer, and David Harmer, a self-professed opponent to the bank bailouts who nevertheless received a severance package from a bailed out bank.
“Voters will easily be able to discern the differences between Garamendi and Harmer, who disagree considerably on the major issues facing the nation and district,” wrote the Times. “Garamendi supports single-payer health insurance. Harmer does not. Harmer opposed the federal stimulus package. Garamendi supported it. Garamendi wants a strong cap-and-trade system to help cut greenhouse gas emissions. Harmer calls it an onerous burden on consumers. Garamendi supports the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and a change in the law to allow same-sex couples to legally marry. Harmer has not taken strong positions on either.”
Lt. Governor Garamendi is supported by President Barack Obama, President Bill Clinton, and Vice President Al Gore.
Garamendi has also been endorsed by the San Francisco Chronicle, Vacaville Reporter, San Francisco Bay Guardian, and Bay Area Reporter in the general election.
A special general election will be held on November 3rd. For more information, please visit http://www.garamendi.org.
