Event Connects Two Dozen Government & Non-Profit Service Providers with Local Seniors
Solano County senior citizens pack into a church in Fairfield to learn about
valuable social services at Rep. Garamendi's Resources Fair
FAIRFIELD, CA – A cloudy day in Fairfield was made a little brighter for nearly 100 Solano County senior citizens today. At Congressman John Garamendi's (D-Fairfield, CA) second Senior Resources Fair, held at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, two dozen non-profit and government service providers offered seniors assistance on an array of services, including Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, veterans services, insurance, housing, food assistance, and hospice care. One group even offered free hearing scans to check for undiagnosed ailments.
"I want to thank all the service providers that took time out of their busy schedules today to help all the seniors in this room," Garamendi said. "In this community, we do all we can to make sure our seniors live out their golden years with their heads held high. I’m glad I could do my part today."
"It's been a great forum. I found a lot of interesting things here for seniors," said Ken Kinsman, a senior who attended the event. "We're thankful that Congressman Garamendi put this on."
In addition to the service booths, two breakout sessions were held on avoiding scams that target seniors and finding the right insurance policies.
Last year, Congressman Garamendi held a Senior Resources Fair in Antioch. He has also held two Veterans Services Fairs, in Fairfield and Dixon, a Small Business Workshop in Walnut Creek, and a Jobs Resources Fair in Concord. Planned 2012 events hosted by Congressman Garamendi include an Agriculture Summit, Small Business Workshop, Jobs Resources Fair, and Health Care Summit.
"I learned long ago that a good public servant must help out the community. It doesn't take an Act of Congress to connect seniors with two dozen service providers, but a few phone calls from a Congressional office certainly helps," Congressman Garamendi added. "I feel blessed to wake up every morning knowing that our work is really making a difference in people's lives. I encourage anyone who needs assistance dealing with a federal agency to call my office and see what we can do to help."
