Woodland Daily Democrat Endorsement

Woodland Daily Democrat

We are endorsing Rep. John Garamendi, D-Walnut Grove, to be elected to represent Yolo County in the newly redrawn 3rd Congressional District.

Garamendi, 67, is competing against Kim Vann, 37. He has already served a two-year term, and that is in addition to his other prior elected experience in the state.

Garamendi has been a part of California politics since 1974, when he won an Assembly seat. He has served as a state senator, insurance commissioner and lieutenant governor, a post he left midterm in 2009 when he won an open congressional seat.

Garamendi is a rancher and has decades of background in water and environmental issues, having worked in the mid-1990s in the Clinton administration Interior Department.

Garamendi advocates tying government contracts for rail and other public works projects to agreements that the equipment is manufactured domestically, an important way to rebuild manufacturing jobs. That could be especially important to the California economy as the Brown administration embarks on the high-speed rail project.

Few could argue that Garamendi is a hard worker. He also is a staunch Democrat, which does pose a problem of finding common ground with Republicans on issues that affect the Sacramento region. Indeed, he's no Mike Thompson, who often reached across the aisle for compromise.

Vann, Garamendi's Republican opponent, also has a strong background in agriculture, coming from a rice farming family, but we do not want her following through on Republican pledges to repeal the Affordable Care Act, one of the most important pieces of legislation approved under the Obama Administration. We also do not want someone in office who would support the Republican idea of "trickle down" economics that has already taken us into one recession.

Garamendi is better fit for Yolo County and deserves your vote.
